People arrive late
People leave early
People leave and enter the room during the meeting
People talk too long and off the point
Some people are not willing to contribute
Often nothing is achieved - we can't make decisions: subcommittees create even more work
People often become antagonistic and "attack" each other
The Chair does not control the meeting
There is so much packed into one day - we can never finish - we always go way over time
People do not take meetings seriously
Many of the meetings are unnecessary
There are too many people and one does not get a chance to air one's views properly
People do not know what the meeting is for - the objective is not explained
The room is uncomfortable - too hot, too cold, too stuffy
The timing is unsuitable - 4 o'clock on a Friday
The venue is unsuitable - too far from my office, no parking and traffic is "hell" trying to get home.

How many problems did you identify? Don't worry if your list is a long one, you're in the same boat as almost all managers. I've given effective meetings workshops to hundreds of managers since 1985 and they all report the same problems - no matter what industry or size of organisation they work in. During the Brilliant Meetings web workshop you'll find ways to overcome all of these problems. Of course, you've already given yourself some good advice. What annoys you, also annoys others, so common sense tells us, if you're "guilty" of any of the "meeting sins" listed above, try not to re-offend. This will save you time and earn respect.

What Is a Brilliant Meeting?

Here's how I define a brilliant meeting:
A meeting is brilliant when it achieves most of its objectives in minimum time to the general satisfaction of the participants.
We may not achieve all objectives and we won't keep all the people happy all the time, but in 90% of cases we can!

I hope you enjoyed this short taster exercise and that it has helped. The Brilliant Meetings web workshop will save you time and effort in preparing and attending meetings by giving you:
